Great thread idea!

I used to be a 5x week gym regular, but that was before we moved way out of town, making it impossible for me to get to the gym by 7 am. Now I go at lunch, so I only have 3-4x week available. So far I've been once, but I'm getting creative; Monday I had a lesson at lunch so I walked both ways (an hour walking total). Tuesday I made it to the gym; yesterday I had weightwatchers and I couldn't do both.

Today's class is Zumba (a latin dance class). I never miss it because I love it soooo much!

My goals: get back down to my goal weight (six pounds too go!), get fit enough to be able to run 5 km without stopping (about 3 miles), and start working exercise into my weekends. I'm trying to build up to the running slowly as my cardio fitness is not what it once was and I don't want to push it.

Well I am embarassed to say that I have not been to the gym this week yet. It has just been too hot. So the temp dropped today, so I must go.

Neat thread!

If I miss too much time, I feel like I have to start over. My problem is constantly trying to mix up my routine so I won't get bored. I don' t like running but I do it about 3 times a week and between days I ride a bike. I do my run after work and then do some strength training. So, I'm doing some type of exercise 5 to 6 times a week. I made a mistake today and ate meatloaf for lunch. It was trying to back up on me when I tried to run. Lesson learned!

Some days I don't feel like exercising and make myself go and ultimately have a very good workout and then other days I'm ready and raring to go and my workout stinks. It is a commitment.

Middle of the afternoon when I'm exercising, my body would rather be taking a nap. I know if I don't do it then, I never will. I get to work a little before 7 am and would rather exercise before work but it is hard to get to bed early enough when you have kids... especially with it being summer break.

We all have to do what works best for us but I consider even if you only do 30 minutes a day and are consistent, the benefit will pay dividends in many ways.

Yeah I have only been doing the minimum this week but its just so I can get in the habit of exercising every day.. I am insulin resistant so it is better if i exercise every day.. it doesn't have to be strenuous either.

I ran three miles today on the dreadmill. My time was 32:11. When it is 30:00 or below, it is time to add on miles. That makes me happy and sad. It is time to circuit strength train tomorrow. I really need to get in some yoga but my children make it rather impossible to workout at home. They don't nap at the same time. I will figure it out somewhere.

I did another 2 mile walk and 4 mile bike ride today. The walking really helps with the biking. I was feeling lazy and was going to skip my workout and this thread motivated me. FAWIHTT that is great! is that something you do often or was this a once in a while thing? Just wondering...

Been really bad these last two weeks for me. Last week was VBS. This week, I've been sick. One of the VBS kids got sick last week, and was kind enough to pass it on to me. How generous.

First of all, that 3 mile time is great! Congrats. Second of all, where did you get the "add more miles at 30:00 or below"? I'm curious.

I am a returning runner rather than a beginning runner. I had a baby 11 weeks ago so I am in the process of getting back up to speed which is about 12-15 miles a week. This method is just what works for me. When I reach a point that I am running 3 miles with an average of a 10 minute mile consistently, it means that my body is strong enough to start adding miles. I am hoping to run a half marathon by April so I am being more methodical and diligent with my miles.

If anyone is a beginning runner I highly recommend the couch to 5K program. that is how I started running for the first time 18 months ago after the birth of my first child. Within 4 months I was running 5 miles at a time. Running has really helped me get control of the baby weight. It came off so much easier especially combined with weight training. This time I have added in a much healthier diet consisting of a lot of whole foods. It seems like the weight is melting off. It is incredible. It is hard work but it is going. I want to add that I am 37 years old and had two c-sections in 18 months. My point being, almost anyone can do it because I am no super woman.

Karen, did you run during your pregnancies as well? How close to your due dates did you keep running?

I'm just starting to get back into running and I'm wondering how wise it would be to bump up my running if I get pregnant before I'm quite in running shape again.

I ran until 5 months with my son. Then I stopped because he sat on my bladder and I had to pee constantly while I ran. I did step aerobics until 8 months. Then my big, breach buddha sitting baby make my hips hurt so bad I had to stop. I know tons of people that kept running during there pregancies. My doctor just told me to use sense and stop if it hurt or made me too tired. I think that is why I am rebounding much faster that I thought I would this time. Since it was a c-section, I was hoping to start sort of running by 10 weeks. I never thought I could do this much this soon but I feel incredibly good.

Well I did not get to the gym. But my husband and I walked to the market to return a movie. So that was a good 45 min walk. Nice. :)

I have come home this week because it was hot, but also because he wanted to spend time with me and we have been busy. But we get home and we sit and watch TV. :( So I told him this morning that the guilt trip won't work anymore. LOL!

Thanks for the information about a baby. My biggest fear is having a baby and not getting at least part of my body back. That was very encouraging.

From what my friends with kids have said, the best thing you can do for your body during pregnancy is to be exercising before you get pregnant; it's much easier to stay in shape during, and recover after. A friend of mine was back teaching gym classes 5x/week less than 2 months after delivering her second child. She's convinced her improved fitness is the reason she bounced back so soon.

Made it to the gym 3x this week, and had a long walk Monday as well. And I managed not to get dizzy during my weight-lifting class this time--whoohoo!

Next week's goal; same number of gym visits, plus two runs.

Good thread. I need some accountability for my exercise. Today, I plan to do some gardening and maybe walking. Believe or not, gardening is counted as cardio exercise on sparkpeople, where I track cardio and strength training exercises.

Surpassing Peace I am intrigued by the couch to 5k program. I have never run except in school when we had to in PE and I hated it then. However I have recently wanted to run a 5k. There are always fun 5k runs to do and it is just something I would like to do. I do not want to hate it like I did in school though. I googled couch to 5k and I just might give it a try. I've got to get some good shoes first.

Definately get good shoes. It is the one thing I spend a bit of money on for working out. I hated running, just hated it. Then I had my daughter. Not only did I have baby weight but also a lot of weight from quitting smoking a couple of years before that. On top of it all, I was in my mid 30's and the weight just did not come off any more like it used to. My husband, an avid runner, suggested running. I thought it was lunacy. After all, why on earth should I run when no one was chasing me??? But because I am a loving wife, I tried out his silly suggestion. Seriously though, I loved it. I mean really, really loved it. Yes the weight came off but more importantly I felt incredible. I set goals and met them constantly increasing my speed, distance, and stamina. I really felt accomplished. At a time in my life that was in complete chaos the challenge of it was inspirational for the rest of my life. The endorphin kick from it was like no other. There is serious merit to a runner's high. It also greatly relieved stress. My baby girl was a very high needs baby. I think running is the only way I made it through sanely.

Now I am 11 weeks out of a c-section and I cannot believe how strong my body is. All of that training paid off and I am rebounding faster than I could ever dream. Once again, it is relieving the stress of a fussy acid reflux baby and a precocious 20 month old.

Give it a try. If you don't like it, so be it. But you really might be surprised.

I have done the couch to 5k program a couple of times.. don't be afraid to start off slow.. most people go all out the first few minutes and then wonder why the hate running.

Well today was a hot one in the mid 90's so I didn't bike at all but I did get up early and walked 2 miles and I just now finished another 2 mile walk. So 4 miles of walking is not bad. SurpassingPeace I get the endorphin rush when I am biking so I do understand it. I just haven't experienced it while running...yet. I will look into shoes in the next few days. Until then I'll be biking and walking.

I rode 27 miles yesterday. I can do it but it kicked me in the tail. I was asking myself, what motivates 50 yr. olds to push themselves like this. I'm sure there are many who are my age who ride further and faster. I'm not in a competition, I just want to get in much better shape. This ride had lots of hill... and I hate hills.

So, do I continue to push myself hoping this will get easier or take the flatter roads? What is my reward for pushing? I lose the 20 lbs I want to lose? I feel even better than I do?

The fact is, I felt just as good when I did not exercise like I do now. However, I love the way my clothes fit and not being self-conscious at having a big belly. It has been harder than I thought it would be but I think I will continue to push myself.

I understand where you are coming from Walker. I hate hills on the bike also. They are easier now than they used to be and I am stubborn enough to refuse to get off and walk but I still don't like them. Living in Colorado it seems like I am always pushing up a hill or sailing down one. I was just saying to my husband the other day that I wonder what it would be like to ride on flat ground. I have a long story about how I got started biking after being off a bike for about 25 years. Maybe sometime when I have the time I'll type it up. I did no biking today but I did get up early and walked 2 miles. Walker I have a neighbor who is my biking inspiration. His kids bought him his first bike at 70 years old. He started biking 10 miles a day. I think he is 80 now and he just recently had bypass surgery but there is no telling how much that bike has contributed to his quality of life. When I feel like I can't I think of him. I walked 2 miles so far today. Maybe I can get in another 1 or 2 miles of walking before the day is over.

I used to ride a mountain bike 4 or five times a week and felt I was in reasonably good shape. About a year ago I decided to go further and joined a gym and started working up to running at least 30 minutes and doing strength training. Working up to a 30 minute run has not been easy especially since I hate running. Even my doctor was suprised that I am doing this at my recent physical.

This is now my lifestyle. I figure an hour a day 5-6 times a week is a real plus. However, I bought this hybrid bike a month ago and I'm tearing up the road because it rides more like a road bike. I road the mountain bike more on the road than off. So, I now incorporate about 3 rides a week and 3 days of running/strength training.

I will never be an exercise nut but I'm all about being in shape and feeling good. I hate running and I hate hills but love feeling good mentally and physically so the trade-off is well worth it.

Ok... I guess these Mississippi hills cannot compate. I love Colorado.

Then for a short walk this evening.
