Ran for less than 2 miles on the treadmill then walked. 3.1 miles. Wasn't the greatest run. oh well.

Here's a question for those who run on the treadmill...what speed do you typically run and do you run at an incline?

I've been observing people running at the gym just out of curiosity. There was a woman next to me one day jogging along at 3mph, which is walking speed for me. I've seen a couple of guys running at 7mph.

I walk on the treadmill at an incline of 4.5, but I don't run on an incline. An article I read of late says that women shouldn't run hills/inclines until they're well-conditioned because it can cause hip problems.

I usually warm up at 4.5 mph, then bump it up to 5.0. When I was in top condition, I got up to 5.5 mph. No incline.

Oh I never heard of that. There is a natural incline outside, I have heard from runners world that you should run between 1 and 2 % , never at zero incline. Might make sense from a beginners standpoint who never used the treadmill but I have been for months.

I run slow. I do have short legs so I can run at a slower pace than someone six feet tall.

Right now 3.9 to 4.0 mph. Last time I started running my fastest pace was 5.2 mph

1% incline , working up to 2% , adding .1 each week. So next week 1.1 incline.

Most people at the gym are running too fast and quit after 10 minutes. You want to be able to keep up your pace, so mine isn't much faster than walking at this point.

The article was something about incline v. the angle from hip to knee. It didn't define "well-conditioned" so I don't know at what point the author thought women should begin running hills. Everyone agrees running hills is good for all runners. ???

On the treadmill I run between 4 and 5 mph. I'm slower outside. I saw a guy one day running at 6.5 for more than an hour. He was running when I got there, he ran the entire hour I was on the elliptical and the treadmill, he was still running when I left after going to the locker room. His calories burned were somewhere in the neighborhood of 1700.

I try to go by runnersworld and serious fitness magazines for running advice. There is a lot of misinformation out there. Not shape or Fitness or those magazines that only have bikini workouts.

My Nike + kit says I am faster outside (11:30) min mile so far.

My limit at the gym for cardio is an hour. Then I get bored or tired. LOL But it would be nice to burn 1700 calories. . I spent an hour at the gym yesterday and burned less than 300

I agree you should be at least in the intermediate stage before trying hills or upping the intensity on the treadmill. First off, you want to build your endurance before attempting to increase the intensity of your runs.

When I was running regularly on the treadmill, I'd run anywhere from 7 to 7.2 mph for 4-5 miles, and then sprinting at the end a few minutes at 8 or 9 max. But that was using a woodway at the gym, when I'm on one of those I feel like I can run forever and ever.LOL. At my treadmill at home, it isn't as comfortable running at that speed for that long, it's just the plain 'ol truth that woodways spoil a runner for any other treadmill. They are definitely the equivalent to luxury cars for treadmills. It's harder (which is why I swear by woodways for serious runners....IF you can afford one for home usage), so I run at home anywhere from 6.5 to 6.9 for 3-4 miles.

I haven't run on the treadmill in months though so I imagine it would take a bit for me to get used to treadmill running again. Same goes if you been running on the treadmill and want to switch to outdoor running. I like to run outside because time goes by faster, plus you're facing the elements (such as wind resistance) and hills that increase intensity of the workout naturally. I don't like running on the treadmill with an incline, even 1%, it's just makes me that much more aware of the agony of my boring treadmill run. Hey, I figure if I'm running at such high speeds on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes, that's enough workout intensity for me.lol.

My gym has woodways. They are nice. However these woodways don't have a flat belt, they have indivdiual belts that move (kinda like the construction equipment).. so once a workout I trip. Not enough to fall but enough to break your stride. So thats my only complaint about the woodways. I think they are like 15,000.00 treadmills but they last forever.

Well I guess the home version starts at almost 7k. Ouch.

Here's a mention of the hip thing from Runner's World:

quote:

To prevent bursitis, wear the right shoes for your foot type, avoid running on sloped surfaces, and be sure to increase your mileage gradually (no more than 10 percent per week).

I can't find the other article.

Well, I don't have the treadmill option right now, but I like running outside because there is variety - even just doing the loop around my development. I have one small hill to go up and down. The loop is just over 1/2 mile and I end up running the hill 4 times when I do the 2 mile. I feel it a little more each time! The weather also adds variety: rain, wind, cold (like this morning! Brrrrr!), etc. Plus, I just haven't found an indoor activity that gives me the equivalent cardio/feeling of a run outside.

Like I said, I'm all about running outside when it's cold, but I guess I'm going to need some tights. A co-worker says here we don't have to worry so much about something waterproof, but something windproof makes all the difference. (For example, it's 53 degrees right now--positively balmy --but the wind is blowing 22mph, which means it's really in the mid-30s. )

If you can spring it, get Under Armour Frosty tights. I am kinda paranoid about being cold and these will work til it gets below freezing. Plus you can't feel the sweat. Its weird being sweaty and cold but dri fit/underarmour stuff helps.

This thread makes me wanna run outside after work today, but it's already dark by then, and I don't think it's the safest for me to be running alone after dark around where I live.

Yeah its a pain in the dark, so I am just running outside on the weekend til it gets lighter out, even if I was reflective from head to toe there are too many people not paying attention

Have any of you ever tried Cardio Coach? You load it on to an mp3 player. It's an audio guided workout. It really takes the monotany out of exercise. I think it would be great for running but I use it on the elliptical.

I've never been a runner, but this thread is inspiring me.

I don't have a choice - I have to run in the dark this time of year but I live in a safe area and one of my neighbors is a cop so worse case scenario, I could run to his house!

It's been in the 20's when I've been running. I wear long running pants, jacket, gloves and a hat. Personally, I'd rather it be cold than hot. I hate running in the heat!

Ouch, 7k is still a lot of money to shell out for a treadmill. But like I said, if you got the money it's worth the investment. Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to afford such a splurge. Until then, I'll have to make do with your ordinary run-of-the-mill treadmills!

I always run on a 4.5% incline - I had been doing 5%, but I started getting a pain in my leg - I run between 5.3mph and 5.7mph (I have short legs too!), but for the last quarter mile I up my incline to 8% and walk at 3.8mph just for cool down. I know I could run a lot faster if I would lower my incline a little, but I know that it burns more calories to have it up; plus it makes me faster when I go outside.

It is better to "shake things up" and do something different, but I am such a habit person!!

COOL! When I am ready to get a new treadmill I'm going to show my husband that and then whatever I end up getting will look like a bargain!!!!

That's pretty good! I know I couldn't sustain running at that incline for too long.

Well, I went running on the treadmill tonight for the 1st time in months and it wasn't that bad. I ran for 40 minutes and went 4.5 miles. I started out at 6.5 for the 1st 10 minutes, then increased to 6.7 the next 10 minutes, and then 6.9, with my ending speed at 7.2. I kept the incline at 1% the whole time except the last 10 minutes and you'd be surprised how much difference even 1% makes in a long run! I feel like I had a good run. I opted to run indoors today because it was so cold out, I couldn't get motivated enough to run in the cold.

Ok, since we've pulled you into the "dark side" of running on a treadmill maybe I'll try to increase my speed... I have gotten really complacent about my speed and haven't increased in a long time. Maybe you have motivated me...

I start at 4.8, after 10 min I up to 4.9, then after 10 min 5.0 and then after 10 min 5.1. I am just getting into the groove of running again. It will take a while, but I will get up to starting at 6.0 and have 10 min miles. That is my goal.

Every week or so, I up the speed by 2.5 min. This makes it tougher.

I do run with a 1% incline becaus when I run outside there is an incline. I can't run as fast outside.

I'm going this weekend to get fitted for new shoes. There's a running store two hours away, so my husband and I will make a day of it. He went running with me last night and admitted he liked it. (He previously claimed to not like running.) We ran about two miles at 1:00 run/1:00 walk. I don't want to do more until I get my new shoes, since the ones I have pinch my arch.

Oh goody! I can't wait to hear what you end up getting AND how much better you feel running!! You'll feel like a new woman!
