New shoes! You have enough time you might try getting them online. The closest I've ever cut it was doing one short run, then an Olympic tri (10K run). No problems at all. BUT, I've been wearing the same shoe for years and never had a problem.

<sigh> I feel somewhat better today, but still not 100%. Maybe not even 80%. After talking to some other runners, I've decided to skip the long run this weekend and pick back up on Monday...taking it easy if I'm still feeling bad.

I'm dragging. I've had some very busy days at work and Thursday night I ended up having to stay over until 4am. Then, I didn't sleep well. Needless to say, I'm happy I even got out there to run even if I was slower than molasses in January...

stella--skipping that long run, huh???

Ds1 and I did our Half Ironman this morning. Went about as well as expected, and happy with the results.

Well! I started feeling really good last night so I decided to get up early this morning and see if I felt like running. I did. I was only a little bit stuffy when I started and the run totally cleared my head. I've felt great ever since.

Congrats on the Half Ironman! I don't think I could even do an eighth Ironman. How big was the field? Conditions were good, I assume.

Speaking of, I did that 14 miles almost totally in the rain and got some chafing in unexpected places.

Oh....... gotta love chaffing. Nuthin' like hopping in the shower to feel that burn!

Results havne't been posted yet. I do think this race was smaller than others I've done this season. They had a sprint, mini and Half Iron, so big race overall. The Half Iron only had three waves whereas others they have had five or six.

Well, I've decided to not run in the Charleston Distance Run 5K this year. My feet have been bothering me a bit lately, so my training isn't up to snuff. And besides, we found out the other evening that Mary's half-brother & his wife from Georgia, as well as one of her half-sisters from Tennessee, are coming in town for a visit over Labor Day weekend. I don't want to be all worn out on that day, so I'm skipping out. I'll substitute an autumn 5K for this one, which will give me a break from the heat & humidity.

By the way, my favorite place to shop for running shoes is opening a store here in Charleston. Now I won't have to drive 45 minutes to get my new kicks! That's just too cool!

Gotta go, y'all!

Great job on the Ironman! Wow, I am in awe.

I think I'm tired. I'm just getting to the point where I just feel like I can't go another inch. But I do. I push myself. And then I feel great afterwards. Well, I'm happy that it's over. I don't like that. I want to feel like I can make it through well, not just scraping by. KWIM? I'm wondering if I need to eat more, or differently or what.

Also, I've been getting these aching, lower gut cramps after a run. It almost feels like I've got some sort of intestinal bug. But nothing ever produces. What gives? I mean, I used to just feel like I had to go, but now it's painful.

Duane--BUMMER!!! Have you picked out another and registered?

HomeSpun--it was a HALF Ironman, not a full! Sorry about your gut issues. I went through a season that was more of a "tour of the POJ" NOT FUN! I kept track of all the foods I ate and we tracked it down to one cereal that I just couldn't tolerate--even if I ate it the day before. Eliminated that and the gut issues were gone.

Not yet, his_chosen. I need to check the local schedule, so I'll hit the Web site iplayoutside.com to see what's coming up. This the place for the Tri-State area to go looking for races of all sorts - triathlons, road races, trail races, bike races, etc.

HC--heard anything more about your triathlon yet?

Duane--I hope you find another race that fits your schedule and feet better. Congrats on the new running store!

Homey--I'm always trying new foods pre-run and I tell ya, I have yet to find the perfect food/drink combination. When I have to get up early to run or race it's the worst because I am never that hungry first thing and almost anything I eat doesn't sit well. What time are you running and what are you eating and how long before? Also did you get new shoes?

I got new shoes, the Brooks ASR 7s, which are the "all-surface" version of the Adrenaline 10s. I'll let you know how they are. I have a 7-mile run today after work on wet pavement, so it will be a good test. Supposedly the main differences are more tread and water-resistant uppers.

Are you guys interested at all in stuff leading up to the NYC marathon? Events are unfolding and I'll be glad to post some stuff, but only if it won't bore everyone.

I run aprox 6.30am. I usually don't eat anything pre-run. If I do it's a few almonds. Because if I eat anything then my stomach feels lurchy. No, didn't get new shoes. It's been nutsy around here. Hubby had surgery. So between kids and hubby I'm stuck. But that's ok. I'll get them eventually. But I need to. I can feel it in my legs.

Yeah, I can, but I bought my last pair through Dicks and they have this warranty that includes normal wear and tear over the first year and I want to get them from from Dicks again so I can keep getting the warranty. If I am going to go through shoes like that it's worth it. But the nearest dicks is 45 mins and I got two littles so it's hard to get out. And you can't purchase the warranty online through their website. You have to go to a store. Poo. I'm hoping maybe next week.

Post away!

I had a tough 2 mile run today. I'm just dragging this week and today it was windy.

I hate the wind.

HomeSpun--why would you need to buy a warranty for running shoes?! I've been running since '05. I've gone through more than my share of running shoes. In all that time, I've only had one pair of "defective" shoes. I bought them from a running store and they replaced them--free of charge, no warranty.

Ds1 is filling out his registration form for the Columbus Marathon. He'll be doign the half. I just filled out the volunteer form. I'll be working the finish line again, hopefully doing mylar blankets. My marathon is the following weekend.

I've heard of this.. basically you get them replaced for almost free. Have no idea why Dick's is allowing this program.

Fun! Remind us again how old DS1 is. He's done another half, right?

I've put 11 miles on my new shoes the last couple of days. The ASR7 isn't quite as snug in the heel as the Adrenaline 10s, which is something I really like about the 10s. But otherwise they feel the same. I can tell the tread is deeper, but it doesn't really affect the way they respond at all.

ING New York City Marathon
Part 1

The race is roughly capped at 45,000 runners. How to get in:

1) Run for charity. There are a couple hundred charities that are given slots for runners. Charity runners, of course, have to raise a certain amount of money prior to the race. That amount appears to average $2500.

2) Buy an entry as part of a travel package. If you live outside the US, there are a limited number of travel packages that include marathon entry.

3) Qualify with time. (similar to Boston)

4) Run a whole bunch of NYC marathons. Once you run 15, you are guaranteed entry any year after that.

5) 9+1. Members of New York Road Runners who run at least nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races, and who have volunteered for one event, during the calendar year before the marathon get guaranteed entry. (This is what I did.)

6) Lottery. Most runners get in via the lottery. The lottery opens the day after the marathon and you have three months to put your name in. Runners are notified in March if they gain entry. If you do not gain entry three years in a row, you are guaranteed a spot in the fourth year.

It's what miss giggles said. Not that the shoes are defective, but if they wear out in less than a year even with normal wear and tear I can get a whole new pair of shoes. It's worth it to me!

Am on Hood To Coast watch right now. We have a lot of friends (and some family) doing it, so we are keeping updated on their teams' progress through FB, tweets, texts, etc. So far everyone is doing well, but for some of the teams they are very early into it.
