We have about 6" of heavy wet snow and it's still snowing! I did a short run this afternoon. No real purpose to it other than to get out there and HAVE FUN!!! I am sooooooooooooooo glad I did my long run yesterday!

Nuthin' today. I did 2000m in the fishbowl this morning. After shoveling yesterday that hurt! Could y'all be praying for one of my gym buddies? She is blind and loves to swim. It's the one thing she can do. Friday, she mis-stepped off a sidewalk and ended up with a nasty fracture in her foot. She's out for about 6 weeks.

I'm having to get creative to get my runs in. Yesterday I did the "Last Chance for Boston" route--a 1mile loop. I only did it 6 times. The actual race is in a couple weeks and those idiots--I mean runners!--will do it 26 times! Today ds1 and I drove to another neighborhood. We're still snowed in, that neigbhorhood has dry pavement. I got in a little over 10miles. First time in double digits since October!!!

Ok, I have a question. I want to start running, but I never have before. I used to walk every day up until last summer, then somehow things got hectic and when I finally did have the time, I never went back to it. The reason I want to start running is because I do want to get a workout in quicker than walking and I want to run with my dog. Any suggestions on starting out?

From my own experience I started walking and then I would walk a few laps and run a few laps. Then I got to where I was running all the laps and only walking to warm up and cool down. I gradually increased the number of laps. When I finally got up to a pretty decent number of laps around the yard I had to move to the road and started running on the road instead. quote:

Thanks. I can't wait for the ice to go away so we can start. I love walking but it just isn't enough.

Rainbow--WELCOME!!! Gotta agree with Couch to 5K. Great program that is challenging, but not so much that you want to quit. If you don't "get" a week, that's fine! You can repeat it! And Giggles has it right--get good shoes. Go to a running store. Not a "sporting goods" store or Athletes Foot. A running store. Fleet Feet usually is a good chain. There are plenty of other running stores, too. Take in the shoes you have been walking in. They will want to see the wear pattern. Also expect them to watch you walk--possibly barefoot. Expect it to take a while! Don't go with the first pair. Expect to pay at least $80. Don't worry--it's worth it! I managed to sneak in a decent run yesterday before the heavy snow hit. It was snowing and was just starting to get slippery when I finished. I think I'm going to ahve to get creative to get my long run in. We got about 8" of snow yesterday, a couple more today, and yet another storm coming in later this week. I am DONE with winter!!!

15' is nothing! Long sleeve tech zippered tech shirt, fleece, windbreaker on top. Heavy fleece tights on the bottom. Heavy gloves and hat. Unzip after the first mile or so. I love winter running--as long as I can find pavement! Coach had me down for two swims, two bikes and two runs. I wanted another run! During my ride yesterday (on the trainer) I realized my frame was cracked! She's carbon fiber and that does happen. So she's sitting at the shop now, can't ride her until she's cleared--or replaced. I told my coach and she said I did that on purpose! She gave me another workout for tomorrow. Speed workout. On the treadmill. Should be interesting. I've fallen off the treadmill twice. Both during speed owrkouts.......

ORIGINAL: Miss Giggles I like the program below: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml Please get good running shoes first! My husband is a runner and I would love to be able to run with him one day. And I do know about the shoes. I have to buy my husband new shoes every three months or so when he runs every day. Thanks.

Glad you caught the crack in the frame now before you went outside to go riding! I am so afraid of falling off the treadmill! I am really careful. Only thing that went flying once was my ipod when I jerked the headphones out. It lived.

Still having to get creative about finding pavement. Our neighborhood is still that rutted/half melted slushy stuff. NOT good for running! Yesterday I drove to a metropark thinking I'd find pavement. Nope. Packed snow... Oh well. Tomorrow ds1 and I will drive over to another neighborhood for a long run. Specialized is replacing my bike frame!!! They deemed it a manufacturing flaw. The new frame should be here next week. Hopefully! In the mean time, I can still ride the old frame. I am getting excited, but still bumming that my Ruby Girl will be no more. Here's a link to my new frame-- http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCWomenBike.jsp?spid=45827&sid=10Ruby&ssid=10WMNSRoad

Well, I learned today that you can run a 10-mile race without training, but it's not easy. The Cherry Tree 10-Mile is called "a race for the hard core" and supposedly helps you test your fitness after a long winter. I did not need ten miles to tell I'm out of shape. I only needed one. Anyway, despite my out-of-shapeness, a long trek to and from the bus to the registration area, a long trek from the registration area to the course, killer hills, cold temperatures, and wind...I had a pretty good time. They cap it at 900, so it was a much smaller field than I've grown used to. That was nice. I inadvertently ran over a sewer grate that was a few inches lower than the pavement and twisted my ankle. That caused me to end up walking the better part of a mile before deciding I was okay to keep going. The race was three loops around a park and I was in the final loop, so it was just as far to walk back as it was to keep moving forward. So I did. <shrug> I was seven minutes over my goal of 1:45, but I wanted a faster pace than the half I did back in the fall and I did accomplish that. I've decided to be happy about the whole thing. AND I forgot my Garmin!!! That's only the second time I've ever done that and I felt so nekkid. (And please add my ankle to the prayer list for running injuries. It doesn't seem to be swollen, but it's painful to walk on.)
