How many do I need total? 12?18? I think when we have a newborn I'll buy some Kissaluvs or prefolds, the OS will be kinda wide in the crotch.

I started with 18 and that was enough for 3 kids in dipes, but I had to wash them every day. Now, I have about 15 pockets, with a dozen or so prefolds and 4 covers. That lasts me a few days. I only have to wash diapers every other day or so. Much better. For just Gabby, I'd say 12 ought to be fine. Then when you have another, getting some newborn size will help and that'll be enough Sandy

I'm just starting with cloth diapering though I've secretly always wanted to but was overwhelmed with all the options. I just bought the cheapie chinesee prefolds and have been using those alone with diaper pins. :o quite the leaky experience! I just ordered 3 covers and snappis to make the diapering experience a little easier. I can't wait for them to get here! I want a few fitted diapers for night-time but that will have to wait until next month (budget woes). I'm starting with a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap, a Thirsties Diaper Cover, and an Imse Vimse Organic Cotton Diaper Cover. I don't have questions yet but am super excited!

bringing this back up. I quit with my fourth...good heck. His butt is so sensitive...he got terrible rashes, even with cloth. Generics from DG are the best ones for his poor butt. anyhoo, now that #5 is here...I wanna go back to cloth once her little butt is bigger LOL. I have lots of homemade dipes passed on to me, and am trying to decide what to get to suppliment.

I'm a cloth diaper failure Just not for us. I sold our stash awhile ago with the exception of a couple pocket dipes that we kept to use without an insert for swim dipes.

We use Kissaluvs fitted diapers with Bummis whisper wrap covers. We LOVE these diapers. No kidding, LOVE THEM. We have never had a blowout, not even once. We passed our size 0's and 1's to my sister so now our little niece (4 months old) is in Adam's old diapers. We also use cloth wipes. We cut up old white t-shirts and use those. We LOVE the wipes! I can't stand having to use store-bought -- they just don't seem like they're substantial enough to do the job. And of course, cloth wipes make sense if you're doing cloth diapers anyway. I also have a wet bag that I use when we're out and I take the wet diaper off and stick it in there and put it in the (dry) diaper pail when we get home and then wash the wet bag, too, with the diaper laundry. We do our diaper laundry every single day. Not a big deal since I am a SAHM and DH works from home (so he usually does most of the diaper laundry). This system works FOR US and I know cloth diapers aren't for everyone and never have any judgments on those who don't use them. People have to use what works in THEIR house on THEIR child. This is just what works for us, and it works well. Kissaluvs is great...we're at the last size (size 2) of those and I'm not sure he won't outgrow them in height (front to back) though they have plenty room with regard to girth...before he is potty-trained. If he does get too tall for them then I will seek out a different kind of cloth, too. We love them. Jeanie

ORIGINAL: charity7 I just wanted to share a cloth diaper trick I learned from my MIL 30 years ago! Use a white vinegar mixture to soak your diapers in and even to rinse them in--makes for nicw white diapers! it also helps neutralize uric acid...and for those whose babies urine tends to "eat" the diaper...this will stop or at least slow that down a bit! You can also add 1/2 cup borax to 1 gallon of water to soak your diapers in.... I have found that once baby is past that first 3 months a dry pail is just as nice....you just rinse out the poopies......and then toss into the dry pail. Adding the borax to the wash (and vinegar to the rinse) whitens them nicely as well...but this will not work (the dry pail) if you have a baby with high uric acid.....

We did cloth for the first 3, and just never did with #4.

Nicole, We got them from 2 different places online -- everything from these places -- prefolds (for under the baby's behind), diapers, doublers, covers and the wet bag. The only thing we didn't buy online was the wipes (we had t-shirts here to donate for the cause). LINK 1 LINK 2 They were both very professional and easy to do business with...and retailers I would recommend. When I bought the size 0's before our baby was born I found that one of the sites had a really nice package deal and free shipping so I bought from them. By the time I went to buy the next size up (after the baby was born and at 15 weeks he moved into the size 1's), the package deal was no longer so I shopped around and still got free shipping at the new place. (I was just wanting to save a few bucks.) Again, I'd recommend either of them to anyone. Jeanie

After briefly looking through those sites, I'm regretting buying some prefolds from Wal-mart. I've already taken them out of the package and washed them otherwise I'd take them back.

Ryanne, Talking about Kissaluvs and the quantities we bought: Size 0: Bought 18 diapers, 6 small doublers, 4 Bummis covers, 12 prefolds (Should have gotten a few more doublers and covers) [He was in this size for 15 weeks.] Size 1: Bought 14 diapers, 7 big doublers, 5 Bummis covers [He was in this size for at least 45 or 47 weeks, can't remember offhand....he's not a big kid so it took him a while to outgrow this size.] Size 2: Bought 12 diapers, didn't need more doublers, 6 Bummis covers [He is 17 months and in this size currently. I'm not sure that he will last in this size as he gets taller, though they're fine for the waist and seat by far. This is the biggest size they have so if he outgrows them in height we'll have to figure out the next step.] Ours are the natural or unbleached or whatever PLAIN colors of everything. We don't decorate with diapers. We do laundry every day, usually. Every once in a while we skip a day, but we never run out of diapers. Jeanie

LINK 1 has diaper pins (link is to the page) LINK 2 has diaper pins, too I think, of all places, we found ours at a GROCERY STORE! No kidding, it wasn't Target or anywhere like that -- it was a grocery store, I think! Jeanie Yes, awesome, those fasteners are exactly what I'm looking for. Yeah, unfortunately we looked at the grocery stores. This poe-dunk town just doesn't carry them for some reason.
