........ Wooooot for GnM!!!!!

What a very cool update.

Always.... I love your 'awe in God' moment. Things like that remind us that He doesn't fit in the fuzzy little friendly box many of us have create for Him.

He is AWESOME, MIGHTY, and POWERFUL.... and He sure does love plans, doesn't He?

I took a studying break, too... I shouldn't have but I did.... My bathroom is VERY clean!

Thanks! Yup, He sure doesn't fit in the fuzzy, little friendly box! But I like an awesome God better any day!! Oh and I like how you kept yourself busy during your study break..clean bathrooms are nice! I think it's funny though you couldn't keep yourself from doing something during your break!

I think I've been studying too much. I got a headache earlier today and so I took some tylenol. One extra strength tablet, the headache wouldn't leave me alone, so I popped another one in..I should have just waited for the 1st to kick in. That was..two 500mg tablets 45 minutes ago. Now I can't study! I just tried once my headache disappeared and I realized that my mind was wandering and not really focused on what I was reading and couldn't figure out why at first.lol. Yeah, it doesn't take much for me to be affected by drugs..some people probably don't even blink taking tylenol. I love what chemistry does to our body..

Thank you! I did feel better and I studied through the weird mind wandering feeling, and studied for 3 hours! So all was not a loss.

...... AmFound,

I am just finishing up English 102. The class isn't that bad. It looks worse on paper than it really is. If you are able to complete any of the extra credit assignments than do it. You will be thankful later.

(For example: I totally blitzed a pre-test worth 100 points. The extra credit points would have been totally worth it and made up for my mistake.)

.... and yeah. I now have an old fashioned 'paper' calendar. I'm too quick to dismiss my computer calendar reminders and then don't go back to them.

The most important thing is to schedule study time every day if possible (at least an hour for each class).

I have a 3 ring binder for this class... some of the reading has to be done online or printed from on-line. I would suggest printing all the online reading. It's very helpful to be able to see the actual pages and to flip back and forth for writing essays or for when it's time to take a test.

Also... print out all the outline notes which are provided. Again, very helpful for test taking.

The thing that was confusing to me was the fact that when you post your online Discussion Board stuff... you need to copy your submission and the response to another student into a word document and submit it through a separate link. (not all teachers do it this way)

The online classes at Liberty are very challenging... so yeah... there's been a sacrifice of time for other things for now. It's worth it.

R8chel, I printed the first 2 weeks last night and found a 3 ring binder. I'm going to TRY to get the essays written ahead of time.
I have 2 paper calendars and my Outlook calendar to keep me on track.

Right now, I'm taking one class per session. This semester is English 102 and Philosophy 104. Next semester is a bible class and a theology class. I might add another class per session next year, but I'm on the "pay as you go" plan so we'll see how the budget looks...

I'd like to finish soon...but I think it's gonna take me 3 years.

Thanks for the encouragement!

..... very cool, AmFound!

I'll be taking Bible 104 and American History for Fall B and Psych 210 and Theology 104 for Fall D. I am soooo glad they stagger the online classes!

Eagle... how cool to have your foot in the door! Praying that God will put your entire body right through that door as well!

R8chel...any hints on where to find cheap paper and ink? My poor printer is getting a work out and I'm only up to week 5 of the assignments! I sure hope the rest of my classes aren't like this! Fortunately, I like to read and write, and can get some done during my lunch break at work.
I'm glad they give you the "week zero" to get the jump on stuff...heaven knows I'm going to need it!

Hopefully my hubby will only be out of work one more week, and things will get back to "normal" around here. I can see that watching football is not going to be an option this fall. I think I'm going to start my fiction essay next week IF I can wade through those short stories...

Praying...

Hey Guys!

Eaglelady, congrats! Praying you find the funding needed.

I've been in training all week and am pretty much wiped out...a ton of info on the agency I will be interning with and the organizations and agencies they collaborate with. I got some very surprising news...my soon to be supervisor wants me to begin coming in twice a week for personal training(play and art therapy) and sitting in on groups supervision. She wants me to be ready to begin seeing clients in a few weeks instead of waiting til December. They have a waitlist of 2-3 months for clients to see a therapist, so, she wants me ready to go very soon. Looks like I'm getting ready to be tossed into the thick of things instead of gently eased in as I thought. I'm equally excited and freaked at the same time! I have to get a pre-practcum agreement with the dean so I can count those hours towards licensing. So cool to see all I've worked for for the last several years really happening!

Congratulations, karlie!

Welcome to the forum, WasLost.

Praying, Eaglelady.

I start class Monday. Got my books (3 volumes) yesterday. Will look over them this weekend to see what authors/stories are included in World Lit. I will probably spend most of next weekend reading ahead, if I can.

...... cheap paper: I go to WalMart and buy the cheapest paper there...

Ink: I scour the internet... sometimes ordering online is cheaper than driving to the store. Sorry I don't have any other fantabulous ideas!

Working ahead on your papers is a most excellent idea. I got stumped on my last paper... it was due tonight... and I'm still not done. I'll try submitting it late. The last paper is 25% of my grade. I am resolved that the worst thing that could happen is that I'll have to take the class again.
....

Woooot! Karlie!!! I think I'd be excitedly freaked, too. Fantastic!
....

You guys are sooo smart for working ahead. I'm going to try to do a better job this semester and do that myself. I'll be printing the info for my next two classes tomorrow...

Bible is gonna be huge... I took a peak at the introduction posted by the professor. We don't have the read the entire Bible in 8 weeks, but he recommends it.

What an interesting thread. I will be returning to college on Monday, 15 years after I got my Bachelor's in Communications at Chapman University, to pursue (tentatively) a certificate in Web Page Design at Mt. San Antonio College in Southern California. I'm also working part-time in the morning, so that will leave the rest of my day open for classes, studying and pulling out my hair.

I will be taking three classes. Intro to Internet Technologies ("Internet 101"), Web Page Design with Dreamweaver CS5, and a half-credit PE class called Cardio Conditioning. I'm taking the cardio class to help manage my diabetes and lose weight long-term. I thought about adding a fourth class, but after taking it to God in prayer, I believe He told me to hold my horses.

I hope to have a certificate by Spring 2012. I'm returning to college because I had been out of work for over a year and a half and was considering going for a similar certificate at a local adult school, but that program has been eliminated because of budget cuts. So I have to pony up the extra lindens to get the classes I want at Mt. SAC, a community college, instead.

Mt. SAC has 40,000 enrolled students, and all of them seem to be on campus at the same time during the first week of classes. Parking is gonna be interesting, so I plan to park a few hours before my first evening class and dive into the Internet Systems textbook I shelled out $110 for because it's a brand-new 2010 release and no used copies exist. College textbooks must be one of Satan's devices because they now print new editions every year so you have to buy the stupid thing new.

And, by the way, I'm 40 years old and will most likely have classmates young enough to be my own kids.

While looking for a Celebrate Recovery meeting in Anaheim, CA, I drove through a part of town that in recent years has become an Arab/Middle Eastern neighborhood, complete with billboards (in English) for Islamic charities and Muslim-owned businesses.

I was reminded that Mt. SAC, where I start tomorrow, has a sizable Muslim student population, and they are very vocal about advocating their faith intellectually, scientifically, philosophically and socially in the marketplace of ideas. These students also demonstrate once and for all that it's prejudice and a sin to stereotype them all as terrorists or wanting to destroy our country, as they have repeatedly condemned the 9/11 attacks and called the likes of Osama bin Laden "a few tacos short of a combination plate" who take the Koran out of context for their own racial and selfish purposes, and who will actually be punished by Allah rather than rewarded for their actions.

I plan to join Campus Crusade for Christ at Mt. SAC and fellowship with other Christian students this semester, as well as hopefully share with them my experience in sharing my faith in an academic, intellectual manner with others of a different faith or none at all, since such big-worded "egghead" witnessing was what brought me back to Christ about 15 years ago. I'm also open to learning from those kids as well, as this old geezer is a lifelong learner.

This summer I took classes at my local community college for seven weeks, I'm older student too(30 ish) and it was an experience . I like the freedom of it all , but it was too much after awhile . One of my professors wouldn't pass me, and that held me back, and I decided right then and there to leave here. The degree i was pursuing was Addictions Counseling, and I honestly need job skills. I just wanted to see if I had what it takes, but I couldn't picture my life 5 years from now. So I recently enrolled in beauty school, which is really my passion. It's funny, over the years people assumed i was a stylist, or did something in the profession and I always reacted funny, me, no....b/c I always assume they don't make much, but secretly I love that stuff. It's true, always go for your passions. For over 11 years I was in healthcare and even though I loved taking care of people, I was miserable. So my course starts in September. Thank you gguys for listening. And to all that's going back to college or wherever, go for it, may God guide your footsteps. Thanks for listening:)

karlie, that is so great! I'm excited for you! That's a wonderful opportunity, I would be a bit nervous too (first day jitters and all.lol), but I know you'll do great!! Congratulations!

soft_warrior, don't feel bad. You are where your passions are so that's all that matters. We all go through some downs to get where we have to be. I've gone through plenty, but I don't let that stop me!! Welcome to the thread!!

I'm excited. I just e-mailed the prof I sent an e-mail way back in March earlier today about lab work opportunities in her lab. She e-mailed me about an hour later saying that she did need help and that I'd be doing basic lab work (what everyone does with no prior lab experience) but I was happy about that! It's my foot in the door! So I'm planning on meeting her tomorrow, I have to register to take biological, chemical, and bloodborne pathogen safety classes before I can work in the lab. (it's required for all people)

I'm just happy! God is opening doors for me and it's exciting. I'm glad to hear everyone is doing well and getting ready for the new semester to start up..yikes, can't believe it's almost here!

Well, after months of planning and days of blogging, my return to college is finally a reality. I started Web Page Design at Mt. SAC this evening, and the professor is a real cutup. I think I'm gonna like this class.

I'm still shell-shocked that I actually AM back in college again. It feels weird, but in a positive way. In the confusion over the orientation for my cardio class, and finding my way through the massive campus, I had the same sense of excitement and confusion I experienced when I was just a teenager beginning my first day of college at Chapman University, where I lived on campus. Major flashback and do-over; it's like deja vu all over again, except it's a rerun.

It took 20 minutes to find a parking spot, but I didn't mind since I had the frosty cool AC on in my car and it was well over 100 degrees outside! The place was jumping with students, and I soaked in the newness and the atmosphere. But I'm still in shock that I actually did it and it's actually happening.

And I still have two more classes to meet up for tomorrow.

How's everyone's first week of classes going? Excited?

richartrod, sounds like everything went well your first day! I can't believe it, 20 minutes to find parking? Oh, and I also agree with you about prices of college textbooks!lol My organic chemistry textbook cost me around $200 new. It is a new edition so of course you can't get it used anywhere! The study guide and solutions manual cost $120. It's ridiculous how expensive this book was, not to mention the solutions manual! The only upside is this book is used for the second half of the organic chemistry sequence so at least I can use it for next semester as well.

I can't wait to start at this lab. I will be starting at the bottom, doing basic lab duties but from what the professor was telling me, eventually I can undertake independent research projects. She has 2 other undergrad students working on research projects. She even has one in mind for me already, dealing with the hemolytics of the bacteria she's studying (basically, you grow the bacteria on blood agar, observe the zone of "clearing" you see. The more clearing, the more hemolytic the bacteria).

So I'm excited. While in the beginning it probably will be all mundane lab tasks (cleaning, autoclaving, etc), it sounds like later I can really dive in and help with projects! I feel like I can learn a lot, gain experience in research lab work, and that it will be a huge benefit for me later.

alwaysinjoy2000,

Actually, looking for parking for 20 minutes the first day of classes is pretty good since Mt. SAC has 40,000 registered students and everyone seems to be on campus all at once, trying to add classes, find their classrooms, navigate the huge-mongous campus and stay hydrated in this horrible heat wave.

It got up to 100 again today, with a breeze making it a wind chill factor of 96. Kids were getting tanked on free water cups at the info booth in front of the student services center, including this old kid. It's been an unusually mild summer in LA this year, and this late heat wave is just a cruel joke for new and returning students. Where was this real summer weather when the kids were still on summer vacation? Ain't it a little late for this weather, chief? Oh well... I have orientation for my cardio class on Thursday and Intro to Internet Systems tonight.

It's me again.

I started Intro to Internet Technologies at Mt. SAC tonight, and while the professor is very likable and has a wicked Dennis Miller-type sense of humor, he also revealed his hostility to biblical Christianity when he talked about how the programming code for Linux and the World Wide Web were freely released to the world for the business and academic community. In the same vein, he then said that the early Christians did the same thing in Acts 2 by giving away everything they had and lived in communes without profit motive or selfish gain, all but saying that they were the first communists. I chose to bite my tongue because this was the first night and I know the poor prejudiced prof doesn't know what he's talking about, let alone know how to quote the Bible in context.

One of my classmates, probably in her mid-20's, revealed her stripes when she joked that besides creating a killer app or website, the best way to be remembered for all time is to sacrifice yourself, be buried, get resurrected and have everyone worship you.

Since Mt. SAC is a public college, I am not surprised by this hostility, but for it to come out on the first night was unusual. Since I used to be a liberal Christian/agostic and was once on their side, I'm not so quick to attack them on the spot or get into useless circular arguments, argumentum ad hominem, dicto simpliciter or glittering generalities with them. It was the rational, calm, intellectual and dare I say "eggheaded" testimonies of Christian intellectuals on campus and on the radio that brought me back to the kindgom.

How do you guys handle issues like these without uselessly blowing your top, which I've seen sadly all too often?

Rich, that's a hard place to be. If I felt the Bible was being misquoted, or Christians being improperly represented and I felt knowledgeable enough on the subject(including scripture if it was a biblical discrepancy) I would gently disagree and voice my opinion. I never took flack for it, in fact, if done respectfully, I found most professors open to what I said and respectful even if they disagreed. Classmates were another story, especially the younger ones...they want to argue with passion and feeling instead of fact, and had no tact or respect for others opinions. It was usually not even worth getting into with them.

For the most part, I left things like that alone unless I really felt the Lord lead me to get involved. I shared with those I made friends with in a one on one situation when the time seemed right or they asked me a question. But, I didn't feel it was my place to become a one-woman crusader for the entire classroom. I know some people would disagree, and that's okay! That's just how I chose to handle things.

Yesterday my supervisor gave me my work days and assigned me to my office. I will basically have openings for up to 12 clients, and there is a waiting list full of them, so I am about to jump way in! One full day I will see mostly children, and the other half a day I will work with individual adults and couples. They are even getting business cards printed up for me. How strange is that?? I begin seeing clients by the end September. Wow...I can not believe I am finally here!
