Yikes. I'm surprised they let the rabbit run free in the classroom. Even excluding deliberate actions like this, I would think it'd be pretty easy for him to be hurt accidentally. I have a few friends with small dogs and whenever I'm at their house, I always have to make sure that I'm not about to step on one. Then there's the sanitary issue. -Dan.

Yes, I'm suprised the animal was allowed to run loose. Out for examination or something specific for the class instruction OK, but just loose hopping around the room? We had plenty of fish, lizards, mice, frogs.... in my science classes as a kid, but they were always in tanks. If any of my classmates had done that to a class animal I think there would have been some 'classroom' justice after school with the girls leading the beating!

DS said this has been kept really quiet even though there were 21 other kids in the room and several others were at the table and saw him do it. I cannot believe that the kids name is not "out there" in the halls.

HAHAH! I wish I had thought of that when I was carrying around a magnifying glass burning ants, caterpillars, worms...even my brother's arm!

Then there's the sanitary issue. No kidding. My son's teacher had a pet rabbit in the room, and it stunk like crazy. And he is allergic. I had to have a few talks with her before she removed it. It was a private school with only 3 kids in her class. quote:

when i taught, teachers who had animals like guinea pigs or rabbits let them roam freely in the class. not all day, but at certain periods. and none of the animals ever got hurt. the kids were aware of it's presence. they were also extremely protective. plus, the class would talk about the animal, learn about it. read about it. anyone who wanted to hold it or touch could. the animal was extremely safe. and because everyone in the class knew the animal was loose, teachers would put a sign on the doorway so that those coming in were made aware. and there was some kind of board going across the door to keep the animal from wandering into the hall. this went on for years. and there was never an issue of cleanness or anything. the students helped take care of the animal the way they took care of animals at home. no smelly animals. no smelly cages. they were properly fed. properly cared for. we even had kids who would volunteer to take the animal over vacation or the summer...with their parents' permission. kids respond when you talk to them and teach them. but i think the teacher should have told the class the animal was kicked. i think it would have been better to be honest than lie. she didn't have the give the name of the kid just admit that it was kicked and state that the kid is suffering consequences for his actions. that might make others think twice about doing the same thing.

Surgery? What could a guinea pig need? I don't mind animals in the classroom as long as my kids are not expected to take them home. 4 kids and a puppy are enough for me.

eww, I know it hurts in humans, so I am sure that in little animals it had to be pretty bad. So far, I have only seen fish in our classrooms. I think that is good because what do you do when you get a kid with allergies? I cannot touch rabbits or guinea pigs because my eyes swell shut if I do.
